In June 2009, the first annual Heart of God Africa Vision Project came to life. Hundreds of prescription glasses came pouring in from all over the United States in a joint effort to bring sight to those in need. Our goal was not only to provide them with corrected vision, but also to show them a clear vision of Jesus Christ.

Dr. Bwonya, a specialist in Optometry in Mbale, Uganda, began screening the orphans at Smile Africa and King’s Primary School before our arrival. The news soon spread and before long he was not only screening the children, but men and women as well. He spent many hours of service preparing for our arrival, expecting nothing in return but the joy of using his talents for Christ. A true man after Gods own heart.

The Vision Project was received with great celebration. We were greeted by official dignitaries, men, women and children. It was overwhelming to stand before God, with everyone present, and have the opportunity to witness to each of them about the wonderful gifts that Jesus Christ had provided, through people they would never know. The vision of who Jesus Christ is, became evident in many ways that wonderful day.

The officials present at the celebration made it very clear that they were deeply appreciative of the efforts on behalf of the Ugandan people. They thanked those that had participated in the event, and most importantly, Jesus Christ for His goodness and His faithfulness, praising His name above all names. It was made public that they would insure that our future vision projects would be met with gratitude and blessings. Future prescription glasses brought into the country on behalf of Smile Africa through our Heart of God Africa Vision Project would be duty free. Dr. Bwonya also made public that he would conduct annual vision screening at no cost for the yearly vision projects.

Donations of your old prescription eyeglasses are continually being accepted by Heart of God East Africa. Your recycled glasses will be matched and passed out to the men, women and orphans that can not afford eye care. If your church or organization would like to be involved, please contact us.

Another important note to share is that while vision screening is being performed, Dr. Bwonya comes across many other visual challenges that prescription glasses can not correct. Eye surgeries are required for many adults and children. Donations are needed to cover the cost of these treatments as well. While we know that the needs are many, not all are called to cover each one. Please prayerfully consider how God can use you to reach out to those so desperately in need.
